Trae Dmarcus Hawthorne, age 15, of Gaylord, Michigan, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 1, 2024, after a courageous battle with terminal cancer.

He was born on August 28, 2008, in Gaylord, Michigan, to Timothy Duane and Ashley Rose (Lube) Hawthorne, and soon after became the best big brother his sister, Alana, could ask for.

Trae was your typical teenage boy who loved to play video games, football, and hang out with his friends and family. Trae never let his prognosis stop him or hold him back. He was a fighter from day one.

Trae was known for his big heart, courage, strength, and determination. He was a person who said “I love you” often and was never afraid to speak his mind when needed. His mischievous and infectious smile will live on in people’s memories long beyond his short years.

On March 24, 2024, Trae made the decision to get baptized as a public declaration of his faith and asked for the Lord’s forgiveness of his sins. This may have been the proudest moment of his beautiful life. His grace and dignity were an inspiration to all. May he rest in peace in the arms of the Lord forever.

Trae is survived by his father, Timothy; and his sister Alana, both of Gaylord, Michigan; grandparents, Lisa (Willy) Marsh of Vanderbilt, and Elizabeth Small of Stow, Ohio. He is also survived by many aunts and uncles, Michael (Ashley) Lube of Gaylord, April (Kenny) Jones of Gaylord, Amber Lube of Taylorsville, Utah, Roy (Shelly) Hawthorne of Kent, Ohio, Brian Fields and Cal Fields of Cleveland, Ohio, Melody Wilson of Alabama and Brian Martin of Waters, Michigan. Also surviving are many cousins, Allison (Matthew) Kusiak, Asia, Devin, Braylon, Emma, Eli, Alyssa, Lucy, Kendall, Ranger, Cash and Wyatt; and his great-aunt, Betty Roddy of Ohio. Lastly, Trae is survived by his many loving friends who became extended family members.

In 2018, Trae was preceded in death by his mother, Ashley Hawthorne. She was definitely there to welcome him with open arms.

Trae was also preceded in death by his grandfathers, Michael Lube, Roy Hawthorne, Sr., and Richard Small.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024, at 2:45 p.m. (following the solar eclipse) at the E-Free Church in Gaylord, with visitation beginning at 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family for assistance with funeral expenses.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Nelsons Funeral Home.
