James Sprenger, age 60 of Gaylord, passed away at his home on January 13, 2018.

James David Sprenger was born in Pontiac, MI on October 16, 1957 to Robert and Waverley (Hamilton) Sprenger. The youngest of four children, he grew up with a deep appreciation and love for his family. They all considered him to be the comedian of the family—doing anything for a laugh, he always had a smile on his face and was the life of any party. In addition to being an entertainer, James also loved to be outdoors. He especially enjoyed being on the lake and boating, and would always bring his kids along with him.

James is survived by his children, Rebecca (Aaron) Hinzman and James R. (Brooke) Sprenger; grandchildren Tyson (14), Bentley (12), and Maddox (8) Hinzman; siblings Diane (William) Scheuber, Robert C. (Tiena) Sprenger, and Karen Wiltfang; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog Junior.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Waverley Sprenger.

A memorial party will be held at James’s home at 1546 Dora Street, Gaylord, MI 49735 on Saturday, August 4, 2018 from 2pm to 10pm.

Arrangements were entrusted to Nelson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

  1. My family lives a few houses down from the Sprenger house. We didn’t know James very well, but we always loved seeing him and Junior. They would sometimes come down our way on the boat, and our dogs would visit. James always had a friendly “hello” for us when we were heading in or out to the lake. His humor and kind spirit always shined. We will miss him. Our prayers to his family.

I have known Jim for 25 plus years, he lived across the street from my family and was always fun, and loving person. My sister babysat for his kids in the 80’s, Gone too soon.

  3. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your father, grandfather, brother, uncle and father to Junior.

This is for Diane (Sprenger) Scheuber…I’m Christine (Latessa) Dugas, one of your friends—WLC Class of ‘69. I am so very sorry for your loss. I have one particular memory of Jimmy that I’d like to share. Many years ago (‘68-‘69?) I spent the weekend at your house. Your mom and dad went out for the evening and left you and I in charge of watching Jimmy. We spent an exhausting day trying to keep up with Jimmy as he ran, climbed, jumped, bounced, and raced around the house. But I remember his bedtime as if it were yesterday. Jimmy was, predictably, not ready for bed. You and I had to literally grab his legs and drag him, kicking and screaming, into his bedroom. The struggle was very real! Diane, I would love to reconnect with you. Find me on FB?
