Leonard Pierce, age 72 of Gaylord, passed away surrounded by his loved ones at his home on Thursday, July 20, 2017.

Leonard Charles Pierce, Jr. was born to Leonard and Ellen (Verplank) Pierce on January 9, 1945. One of five children, he grew up with a deep appreciation for family. Leonard was a sergeant in the Air Force and stationed in Anchorage, AK, a position of which he was very proud. In 1983, he married Doris Smith (Guiney), with whom he spent 34 years of marriage.

In his spare time, Leonard enjoyed fishing, woodworking, puzzles, crossword puzzles,  traveling to the U.P. and Florida. He was also involved in bowling leagues downstate. Above all, though, Leonard loved spending time with his family and friends.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Doris; stepchildren Debra (Curt) Norberg, Keith (Candice) Guiney, and Allen (Megan) Guiney; fourteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and siblings Robert (Nancy), Floyd (Jean), and Richard (Barb) Pierce.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Ellen and brother Daniel Pierce.

A funeral service with military honors will be held on Sunday, July 23 at 1 PM  from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord.

Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Sunday, beginning at 11 AM until the time of services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego County Animal Shelter.

    Worked with Leonard for several years and lost touch with him afterwards. He always had time for a word or 2 when we would run into him around town. Sorry to learn of his passing.
