Mary Jane Anderson, age 79, of Johannesburg, Michigan died February 20, 2024, peacefully at home after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mary was born in Grand Rapids to Joseph and Jane (Jager) Nugent on July 11, 1944.  She graduated class valedictorian from St. Patrick Parnell High School in 1962.  Over the years she worked as the cook at St. Patrick’s School, cleaned houses, and as a tax clerk for Amway Corporation.

Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting, camping, bowling, golfing, and playing cards, but Mary’s first love was being a wife and mother.  She also enjoyed volunteering as a CASA worker and within her church.  Attending plays, musicals, and concerts, and going to casinos were favorite pastimes.

On April 4, 1964, she married Joseph Anderson, who survives. For 44 years they lived in Cannonsburg and Grattan, until 2008, when Joe and Mary moved to Johannesburg to be closer to family.  There they joined Holy Redeemer Parish in Vanderbilt.

Her children include Matt Anderson, of Fenwick, and Kathy (the late Michael) Wilde of Gaylord.  She was a “special mom” to many over the years, including Gina Gildner Denhof (Chad) of Belmont.  Her grandchildren include Devin Brown, Joanna Anderson-Wilde, Jakie Wilde, Jazlyn Wilde, Kyle Wilde, and Makyla Wilde; Keaton, Braydon, and Olivia.  She adored her great-granddaughters Kalani and Raelyn.

She is also survived by her sisters, Sue (Fred) Rentsman of Harvard, and Barbara Anderson (Daryl) of Lowell; sister-in-law, Barbara Nugent of Lowell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Daniel; niece, Jenny; and nephew, Kevin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. from Holy Redeemer Church in Vanderbilt.

The family will receive friends at Holy Redeemer Church in Vanderbilt, on Tuesday, February 27th, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

A luncheon will follow mass in the church hall.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Nelson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, PO Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734

Joe and family, I am so sorry to hear that Mary Jane passed away. Over the years I tried to stay in contact with my friend from St. Patrick’s School but life just seemed to get in the way. I have thought of the two of you often through the years. Mary Jane always smiled and was such a pleasure to know.
Please accept our prayers and sympathy. Sharon (Westveer) Meyer and Loren Meyer
