Leona Marie Beckett (Koronka), 96, passed away peacefully in the presence of loved ones, on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

Leona was born in Gaylord, on August 20, 1927. She attended St. Mary’s school and church. She loved music and met her husband Edward Lester “Les” Beckett at a local Gaylord dance. They were married on November 23, 1946, and were blessed with nine children.

She found great joy watching hummingbirds as she sat on her front porch swing, sipping her morning coffee or drink of the day, her favorite, Bacardi rum and coke, to then enjoy a bag of jellybeans. Between her waitressing jobs and tending to the family, she also had a warm spot in her heart for cats. She fed and took in a couple of felines. One was called “Momma Cat” and the last was called “Kitty Cat.” She loved and cherished her family and friends who brought laughter that put a smile on her face in between occasional tears. From a young city girl to adulthood, in the end, a simple life in the country reminiscing over her years was all she needed. “Rest in peace Mom, until we meet again.”

Leona is survived by her children, LaVonne (Tom) Verburg, Elizabeth Beckett, Errol (Kathy Rautio) Beckett, Marie (Ricardo) Ramirez, Kim Beckett, Kathy Beckett, and Shelly Beckett. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Heidi, Tiffany, Joe, Jason, Charlie, Sarah, Holly, Travis, Nicholas, Jessica, Heather, Erika, Megan, and Emily; with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A tremendous amount of legacy love to be handed down!

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Martha and Edward Koronka; sister, Clara Martin; brothers, Floyd Koronka, and Daniel Koronka; her husband, Edward Lester “Les” Beckett; son, Florian Beckett; daughter, Sue Whyte; son-in-law, Denny Whyte; great-granddaughter, Anna May Bosma; and grandson, Hector Bourrie.

Mother’s smile and welcoming hugs will be forever cherished and greatly missed!

A graveside celebration of life committal service will take place on June 22, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at St Mary Cemetery, on M-32 East, Gaylord, Michigan. A luncheon will follow for immediate family at the Hampton Inn in Gaylord.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation for our mother’s end-of-life care by Boulder Park Terrace in Charlevoix, Hospice of McLaren, Nelsons Funeral Home, and St Mary Cathedral parish office, we respectfully thank you.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Nelsons Funeral Home, PO Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Marie my dear friend and her family. Thank the Lord for the many happy years you had with your Mother. She was a good lady. I appreciate that she let me spend so much good time with Marie in our high-school years. Made those years tolerable for both of us and fun as well. May God be with you all in your time of sorrow. With much Love

  3. My dear friend, Thank you for your kind words and a moment to reminisce to our high school years. You helped make life pleasant then and through the years to this day. Yes, to me, mom was a beautiful soul blessed with a long life span. Some of us have gone too soon. We’re lucky to have each other and we will stay in touch. Love sent across the miles.
    Always Marie
