Helen L. Haskill, age 97, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 16, 2022.

She was born on May 3, 1924, to August and Clara (Krueger) Stark, of Dearborn, Michigan.

When she was in her teens the family moved to rural Johannesburg, MI. This is where she met George “Lester” Haskill. On December 9, 1944, they were married.

Helen was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a homemaker, breadwinner, and caregiver, and loved cooking bountiful meals for her family. All were welcome at her table. Helen found peace and happiness through painting, ceramics, playing the organ, cooking, and crafting. She was content to sit for hours crocheting.

Her independence spurred her to reject help from others, insisting on doing things on her own. It was not uncommon for her to head out, even in a snowstorm, to deliver meals to family and friends. She would even pack her car with food, blankets, and clothes, on her journeys to visit distant relatives. Helen lived her life on her own terms.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Haskill; her parents, August and Clara Stark; brothers, Carl and Edward Stark; sisters, Viola and Betty; and son, Donald Wesley Haskill.

She is survived by her children, Larry Haskill of Gaylord, MI, Gary (Nancy) Haskill of Johannesburg, MI, David Haskill of Johannesburg, MI, Patricia (Robert) Makins of Gaylord, MI, Terry (Harold) Lake of Gaylord, MI, Debbie (Larry) Quakkelaar of Byron Center, MI, and Kathy (Jim) Nee of MI and Florida; 18 grandchildren, and 46 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 25, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at the Nelson Funeral Home on Monday, April 25, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Breast Cancer Awareness online at https://fundraise.nbcf.org/give/251086/#!/donation/checkout or to the Alzheimer’s Association online at https://www.alz.org/?form=alz_donate.

Arrangements were entrusted to Nelson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, PO Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

  1. Condolences to your family. Memories of Helen from visiting Jim and Kathy in Saugutuck are fond. I loved her sauerkraut with sausages! She was so strong! I have been in awe of her strength for a long time. So sorry for your loss.

    Sincerely,
Mary and Rich Nee and family
