Fred Kwapis, age 81, loving husband to Faye Kwapis, passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2023.

Fred was born on November 20, 1941, in Johannesburg, MI, to Peter and Virginia (Dreffs) Kwapis.

He started his career working for the Department of Transportation for the State of Michigan and finished as an Engineer for General Motors.

Fred married Faye Ann Schmidt, the true love of his life for 59 years. They raised two children together, John and Jodie.

Fred had many hobbies and pursuits. His woodworking skills are displayed in the house he built with his own two hands. Also displayed are many pieces of furniture he restored with Faye or built from rough wood. He spent his summers working in the vineyard, housed on the family property. He was a man always in motion; always there to help others in the family. He was truly an unselfish man; everyone came before him.

He is survived by his wife, Faye; son and daughter-in-law, John and Tracy, and their four children; Sydney, Blaire, Paris, and Sailor; and his daughter and son-in-law, Jodie and Mike, and their two children; Madisson and Olivia.

Fred was preceded in death by his father, Peter, and his mother, Virginia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, July 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord. Visitation will begin before Mass at 10:00 a.m.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Nelson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, PO Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

  5. Dear Faye and family,
I and my husband Don send our deepest condolences. This was a shock to hear of your great loss. Fred was my classmate from JoBurg High (Class of 1960). I will always remember the last Class Reunion Fred and you hosted. It was wonderful to gather at your home which has so many personal touches and creations by you both.
Fred was such a personable man. So sorry as our classmates and I will miss him immensely. God Bless you and your entire family.. Sending Prayers.

  6. Faye & Family,

I am deeply saddened to read of Fred’s passing. Over our many interactions I enjoyed his friendly personality and valued his wisdom and occasional counsel. I hope your family will find the strength to move forward with continued purpose and family devotion/joy in the manner Fred showed over his lifetime. My sincere condolences, Mike Anthony

  7. We were truly saddened to hear of Fred’s passing. Him and Faye’s visits to Boggess home were always something our family looked forward too. Many found memories of days on the lake, family game night, or even just some relaxing sunsets with a cold beverage. Fred will be dearly missed.

  8. Faye, I am so sorry hearing about Fred’s passing. He was a wonderful person.
Sending prayers for you and your family for strength and peace.
    Cindy Dort
