Frances M. Smith, age 71, of Chesapeake, Virginia, formerly of Gaylord, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on February 6, 2020.

Fran was born in Grayling, Michigan, on July 6, 1948, the second child of the late James E. and Magdalene F. (Holewinski) Smith.

Fran was a member of St Mary Cathedral. She enjoyed many hobbies, including embroidery, painting, bicycle riding, and most of all baking. She was known for her delicious banana bread, and her no-bake and snickerdoodle cookies. Fran had a big heart and a great love for animals, especially horses.

She is survived by her daughter, Crystal D Fairgrieve of Helena, MT; siblings, Thomas Smith of St Joseph, MI, William (Kathleen) Smith of Chesapeake, VA, James Smith (Janet Allen) of Gaylord, MI, Marybeth (Robert) Neubert of Gaylord, MI and Joseph (Jeanne) Smith of Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.

The family will gather for a graveside memorial in June at St. Mary Cathedral Resurrection Cemetery, Gaylord, Michigan.

Donations to honor Fran’s memory may be made to the Otsego County Animal Shelter, 256 Fairview Rd., Gaylord, MI 49735, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., FL 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
