Donna Jean Sheridan Laug, 93, of Gaylord, died peacefully Monday, April 10, 2023, with family at her side.

She was born in Allendale, Michigan, on July 4, 1929, daughter of John and Edna (Reister) Sheridan.  Donna grew up on a farm before graduating from Coopersville High. She attended Western Michigan University and earned her teaching certificate and taught elementary school for many years. She and Mel, her high school sweetheart, married after he served four years in the Navy, during the Korean war. Donna and Mel then lived in married housing at Michigan State University, where Mel earned a B.A. from the College of Business.

The family followed Mel’s corporate career which involved relocating several times while working for Chrysler Corporation and Standard Oil. Donna taught school part-time and raised 4 young children during this phase of her life.

In 1973, Mel purchased the Amoco Service Station on M-32 at I-75 in Gaylord and became a small business owner. During the next 25 years, Donna helped with bookkeeping and making sure everyone in the family made it to work on time and had 3 square meals. Donna also entertained many friends and family who were visiting Northern Michigan for vacations or passing through at her home. She was known for her hospitality and warmth.

During retirement, they spent 20 years wintering in Titusville, Florida, at The Great Outdoors. Donna enjoyed golf, bowling, bridge, traveling, shopping for “knick – knacks” and being with family and friends.  She was a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Donna is survived by her daughter, Linda (Ben) Doil; sons, Kurtis (Susan) Laug, Cam Laug and Todd Laug; grandchildren, Kristen, Thad, Carly, Trevor, Cam, Brian and Dylan; along with four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Shirley Ralya.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Mel.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Compassus Hospice by mail at 3217 W. M-55, Suite B, West Branch, MI 48661.

  1. We shared so many stories, jokes, and laughter. Your last words to me were, “I love you,” and “Keep smiling.” I only hope I’m as strong as you were as I get older. I will always remember your famous words, “I tried!” That you did my friend, harder than most. Fly high my angel. You will be dearly missed and always remembered.

    Linda, Kurt, Cam, Todd & Family: So sorry for the loss of your Mother and grandmother. Donna and Mel were great people who raised a fine family. Now they are both together again, cheering for their Spartans.
