Anna (Anne) Coonrod, 91, of Waters, Michigan passed away Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord.  She was born on September 16, 1925, in Grass Flat, PA, to Martin and Millie (Murgas) Backa.

Anne worked several jobs to help the family with expenses including working for a family in New York when she was 14 and later working in a hospital in Allentown, PA with her sister Helen. When the family moved to Flint, she worked at AC until she married Charles Coonrod, Jr in July of 1947.

Anne liked to take her children on day trips to such places as the shrine in Indian River, Tahquamenon Falls and on picnics. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Even in the winter when the snow was deep, she would pack a lunch with chicken soup in a thermos and she and the grandchildren would go up the hill (in the backyard) for a picnic. She even brought along an extra dish so that the cat could have some chicken soup, too.

She enjoyed casino trips and she loved garage sales…going to them and actually having them. It was a good way to meet people. Anne also liked to go fishing at the Dam River in Boyne Falls. She was an expert in cleaning and filleting fish.

Anne was a caregiver all her life. She cared for her mother-in-law and father-in-law when they were older and needed help. She also took turns with her family caring for her mother when her mother could no longer live alone.

Anne loved her family–She let each child know that she/he was her “favorite”.

She was a very special wife, mom and grandmother. She will be dearly missed.

Surviving are her seven children, Margaret (Robert) Hunt, Mary Coonrod, Betty (Sandy) Eastway, Linda Christiansen, Irene (Robert) Kidder, Anne Pung, and Charles Coonrod III; grandchildren, Tracy Kidder, and Christy (Andy) Walcott; great-grandchildren, Drake and Allaina Wilhoit; and sisters, Helen (Greg) Swedorske, Dorothy Hyrman, and Evelyn Nielsen.

She was predeceased by her parents, Martin and Millie Backa; her loving husband of almost 70 years, Charles; brothers George, Andrew, Joseph and Martin Backa; her sister, Elizabeth O’Dell; half-brother John Butsko; half-sister Mary Butsko; and son-in-law Clair Christiansen.

A private family gathering will take place later this summer to celebrate her life. Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice Angels Foundation, 401 Center Avenue, Suite 150, Bay City, MI 48708-5939.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Prayers to the family . The yard sale season won’t be the same! Loved visiting with both Anne and Chuck over the years. We were blessed to know them both!

  2. My thoughts and prayers are with the Coonrod Family. Your mother was a very special lady and friend. I miss the days when your Mom, Dad, and I used to sit at the kitchen table and talk when they lived at the first house by the old state rd. They both are greatly missed! Chuck and Anne are together again in the arms of our Lord

My heart goes out to all of you. I know that it is difficult enough to lose a parent and to suffer the loss of two so quickly … I have no words. Grief is always with us, it just changes over time. My thoughts are with you.
