Benjamin Austin Helton, age 63, passed away May 10, 2021, in Petoskey, MI. He was known by his favorite nickname “Gun Slinger.” He is the son of Marie (Little) Mathews and Bobby Helton.  His mom was a great lady and he loved her dearly.

Ben married Joanne Baker on August 29, 2014, in Cheboygan, MI, and she was the love of his life.

Ben was kind and generous. He loved his Harleys’, most people, his music, and most of all, life.

He did not care for ‘fake people’ who pretended to be someone they weren’t. Ben had a great personality and was a good man with a wonderful sense of humor. He had a love for all animals, his grandkids, his two stepsons, Jeremy and Joshua Jackson, and his little dog, Holly (She was his baby). There was little in life that he did not like.

He was a multi-talented, smart man, with 3 degrees from college, and many wonderful friends and relatives. He also loved painting and the work he did surveying.

Ben is survived by his wife, Joanne; his mother, Marie; his children, Zackary, Katlyn and Salena, of Winton, NC, Jeremy Jackson of TN, and Josh Jackson of Cheboygan, MI; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby.

Bens family will be remembering him privately at this time.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Nelson Funeral Home and Cremation Service, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

As you continue life as a beautiful angel the wings you gained and the halo of love, keep your wings fresh and when the time comes I’d be honored to take flight with you, my friend. Dear Sissy JoJo, You are near and dear to my heart along with your gun-slinger, RIP Ben. You were a straight shooter, Ben. I loved it when you and your lady would come riding up on that awesome hog of yours to visit with Bootie, I just happened to be there. Peace be with you, JoJo, and family, at this time of your unexpected loss. Love, Doe

  2. I am glad there is a Heaven. See you again my friend. My condolences to Ms. Joanne and the rest of the family. 🙏
