Harry Charles “Chuck” Nelson, Jr., 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home in Gaylord, Michigan, on April 8, 2020, after a three-year battle with heart and kidney disease.

Chuck was born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 20, 1936. He attended Assumption Catholic High School in Windsor, Canada, as well as Assumption University where he made lifelong friends. While in the Army, he traveled to Washington State and Alaska, where he learned to ski and developed an interest and appreciation for dentistry serving in the Dental Corps. Chuck earned a degree in Mortuary Science at Worsham College in Chicago, Illinois, and after working for various Detroit area funeral homes, he decided to open the Nelson Funeral Home, Inc. in Gaylord, Michigan, after visiting his wife’s hometown for a wedding in the early 1960s.

A passionate funeral director for over 50 years, he loved working and helping people. Chuck took action and always had big ideas. His enthusiasm for life and gregarious personality made him a mentor to countless business partners, family, and friends. He also loved telling stories from his childhood and life experiences. Chuck was an avid boater, who enjoyed water and sunshine in Northern Michigan and Marco Island, Florida. Outside of Gaylord, you could find him in the places he loved most: Detroit, Mackinac Island, and Marco Island listening to Frank Sinatra and spending time with his family.

Chuck was dedicated to his community and served on numerous boards and organizations over his 50+ year career, including Otsego County Economic Alliance, the Gaylord State Bank Board, Michigan Funeral Directors Association (as both a member and as Board President), Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, the Gaylord Elks, and the Otsego County Ambulance Board.  Chuck’s faith was strong and he was a good friend and parishioner of St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord, Michigan. He was also named Co-Buergermeister’s along with his wife Patricia in 2004 and was active in fundraising for the Rotary and Kiwanis projects, Veterans Pavilion, and numerous projects at St. Mary Cathedral School and Parish.

He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 60 years, Patricia (Wattson) Nelson; his children; Carol Nelson-Snyder, Susan, David, Kelly Nelson (Kenneth) Steinthal, Elizabeth Nelson (Philip) Tobias; grandchildren; Jennifer (Darren) Littell, Patrick Nelson, William, and Shannon Snyder, Hogan and Jack Tobias, and great-grandsons Dillon Snyder, and Watson Littell; Cousins; Margery Parsons, and Kate Leidner of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Adeline Patti Nelson, Uncle Edgar and Aunt Irene Bates, and cousins; Jack (Peg) Bates, and William (Winnie) Bates.

A Memorial Mass will be held on August 28, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord, MI. Following Mass, there will be a luncheon at the Big Buck Brewery in Gaylord, MI.

The Nelson family would like to thank the dedicated staff at the Nelson Funeral Home, as well as the medical team who cared for Chuck over the last few months.  Memorial contributions may be made to, the Otsego County Ambulance Corps or St. Mary Cathedral School, through the Nelson Funeral Home, PO Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Iconic, compassionate, cheerful, sincere, giving.. are just a few words that come to mind when one thinks of Chuck. I have grown up in this community and Chuck Nelson is as much a part of my childhood (and adult) memories as is the Alpenfest. He was simply a part of the scenery and a part of life in Gaylord. Chuck ALWAYS had a smile and a warm and cheerful greeting, no matter when or where you saw him. In addition, he remembered everyone and made them feel as though they were his friend. I recall going to lunch with my mom (Thelma Tuck) and Chuck always came over to speak and ask how things were going! I can’t recall any other person who has left such an impression on me. One just had to smile when you saw him in a restaurant as you knew he would be over to greet you soon.
Aside from all the philanthropic giving within this community, Chuck Nelson left SO MUCH MORE. He left an amazing legacy. We are blessed to have known him and he will be missed.
Our condolences to Chucks family, we know your heartache and sadness. May God bless you all, provide comfort and grace to you in these difficult days and those to come. And may you find joy in knowing the joy Chuck brought to all of us and our community.

  8. At a loss for the right words. So much to remember about all the good times and adventures we shared with Pat and Chuck and the kids. Will keep you all close in our thoughts and prayers. Cathy and Phil Hendges

  66. Michael and Denise Metzger

Aunt Pat, Carol, Susan, David, Kelly and Elizabeth – In addition to being a loving Husband, Father, Grand-Father and Great-Grand-Father, Uncle Chuck was a caring and giving soul, with a warm and generous heart, A gregarious and welcoming host and peerless story teller who was, at times, afflicted with a trait I also possess….How is it a mind can remember every vital and humorous detail of a captivating story, but cannot somehow remember the fact that he has already told you that story three times……LOL? But each retelling was worth hearing it again. In this time of sadness know that our prayers are with Chuck and your family and remember (a paraphrase of a prayer from St. Ignatius of Loyola) that by living close to the Lord you shall see His Hand, His Purpose and his Will through all things. Trust in His protecting Love.

I remember feeling very safe and cared for in that moment – a feeling that never changed in all the years I knew him. He was a warm, compassionate and joyful person always. I’m a bereavement coordinator for a children’s hospital now, and I know my first lessons in professionalism and caregiving came from watching him. God bless you all, Nelson family.

Chuck Cared for all! A good friend and colleague. Our heartfelt sympathy to the Nelson family.

  91. Pat and family, I remember when I first met Chuck, we were both in Quay’s barbershop. I had just been discharged from the army and found that we both were stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was there a few years before me as a Dentist and we compared how things had changed in Anchorage and at Fort Richardson. He asked me to install a garage door opener in the garage and while I was doing this, Larry Washburn stopped by to see me and met Chuck. Chuck asked what Larry did and he told him he was laid off from work. Chuck stayed and talked to us for a while, Walt Noa was there also. Before he left he told Larry to go see the Sheriff because he knew he was looking for a deputy. Larry did and he was hired and was a deputy for many years. This is only one memory I will never forget about him doing nice things for the community and his residents. I worked a few funerals with him, setting up for funerals and things had to be perfect! I watched him talking with families and the compassion he always showed them. I remember you with all the little kids living upstairs and working with him and the love you two showed to each other! The well-behaved children who once in a while I would see when doing odd jobs for him. He was a great friend and it was an honor to have known him. He was a pillar to the community and will be greatly missed ny all who came in contact with him.

My thought and prayers are with you and the children. We will all see him again in heaven.

  114. If you look up the words Kind, Caring, Giving, Mentor, Friend, and Compassion, there will be a picture of HC. Patty Ann and HC welcomed me into their family in Marco Island years ago while I was on vacation. I stopped by Marco to see Biz and Philip for two days and 10 days later, I left Marco. Breakfast with Chuck was something I will never forget. HC called me every day when my father was transitioning to make sure I was okay and if I had everything taken care of or if he needed to fly out to Colorado to help me and my family during that difficult time. When he told me that he was proud of me, words cannot express the feeling that gave me. HC will never be forgotten and his spirit will be with me forever. God bless the entire family.
    Love, Tod

  115. Marlene Czarkowski

  119. Hon. Robert J Turner

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Nelson family. David, I never had the pleasure of meeting your father, but knowing you, I believe he must have a been a wonderful man. You spoke highly of him often. Treasure the memories in the years to come. There is no greater bond than that of a son to his father.

  120. Chuck Nelson was one of nicest men I have ever meet. He was one of my first customers when I started a window cleaning business in 1977. He gave me several jobs to do; his funeral home, his own beautiful home with a great view, and his lake home. Also a very active man, it seemed he ran at a different speed, hard to keep up with him. Still, he would always take time to ask how I was doing and family. He also was very family oriented, he was concerned for his children. I’m crying as I write this, he will be truly missed. You were a fine man. To describe Chuck in one word it would be exuberant, he lived life to the fullest.
Revelation 21:3,4 is a scripture that helps me in times like this hope it helps your family.

    1. Dear Pat and family,
I am so saddened to hear of Chucks passing. His genuine concern is what I will remember most.

Pat, you both raised a wonderful family!
      My deepest sympathy & condolences!
