Georgianna (Gigi, Georgie) Proulx Obrigewitsch was born on December 9, 1953, in Red Lake Falls, MN.  She was the 10th of 12 children born to May Belle Bachand Proulx and Celestin Proulx. She graduated high school in 1972, and worked at St. Joseph’s Catholic School and the Arctic Cat factory.   Gigi met Mike Obrigewitsch on May 1, 1976, after exchanging letters for two years.  They married in November, and she moved to Baker, MT, where they lived for 22 years.  The family moved to Gaylord, MI, in 1999, where she resided until her passing.  She was very actively involved in the parish of St. Thomas of Aquinas, and touched the hearts of many in the community.  She worked at APS, Norman’s, and the Otsego Commission on Aging.  Her greatest joy was crocheting angels for her grandchildren and other special people.

Gigi and Mike had two daughters, Beth Eckman (Mike) and Kristy Grimes (Greg), and eight grandchildren; Emily, Anna, Cara, Charlie, William, Joshua, Allison, and Oliver.  She was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, Joseph (Clovis), Celeste and Charles, and a brother-in-law, Andrew.  She is survived by siblings Judith (Russ) Huffman, Louis (Cindy) Proulx,  Vincent (Marilyn) Proulx, Pat Proulx, Paulette (Sam) Wheeler, Claudette Proulx Kanami, Roger (Jeanette) Proulx, Joseph (Judy) Proulx,  numerous nieces and nephews, and the grandchildren of her heart, the Noel children (parents Chris and Chantalle).

Gigi’s infectious laugh, twinkling eyes, loving and generous heart, as well as her mischievous nature, have given her family thousands of memories to hold on to and cherish.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 20, at 11:00 a.m. from St. Thomas Church in Elmira, MI.  The Visitation takes place at Nelson Funeral Home, Thursday, July 19, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and again on Friday, July 20, at church beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  A Rosary will be offered at the funeral home on Thursday, July 19, at 6:00 p.m.  The Burial will take place from St. Thomas Cemetery, Elmira, MI.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Gigi’s name for Father Polycarp’s school and mission, courtesy of the Nelson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Gigi was a warm and loving friend who definitely had that twinkle in her eyes. I have loved her since she was my babysitter way back when I was but a little boy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike and the girls, the grandchildren and all of my Proulx family during this very difficult time. We know with certainty that Gigi now walks with God. There is peace to be found in knowing that.

    With our Love,

The Johannecks (Dan, Jodi, Staci, Nathan, and Leah)

Thank you Dan, Jodi and family! Mom was so very fond of all of you… We are trying to hold on to the knowledge that she feels no pain, no worry, just love and peace now while she looks down at her grandchildren and watches over them.

  11. Dearest Mike and Family,
I am saddened to hear that Gigi has left those of us here without her joy and beautiful personality. I treasure the memories of old when we were in Baker. I pray that God softens your loss with his comfort. Heaven has gained a beautiful daughter today. Love to all.

  12. Dear Mike and Family,
Even though it has been years since we have seen each other, you are all still a beautiful part of my memories and are treasured. The earth has lost some spark with the departure of Gigi. Oh how I loved spending time with you all before I left Baker. Gigi had such a beautiful and larger than life personality. My heart goes out to each of you as you grieve and learn to live life this side of Heaven without Gigi. We know she is celebrating in Heaven. Much love to you all.

    1. You were often in her stories, when we could get her to talk about the past 🙂 Mom often was focused on the future, so I loved when she would get together with the Proulx siblings and they would tell story after story!

  24. Dear Mike, Beth, Kristi and families, Gigi was a childhood friend and I think of many stories and fun times we had with her, from sleep outs, playing softball in a cow pasture and her, winning a pony from a contest and we walked it home to her house. She was mischievous and full of life. Thinking of her and sending blessings to all of you. My deepest condolences.
