Fredrick “Fred” Techel

Fredrick Julius “Fred” Techel, 87, of Gaylord, passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Otsego Memorial Hospital.

Born in Mt. Clemens, MI on April 4, 1932, he was the son of Fred and Flora (Posner) Techel.

On March 5, 1955 Fred married the love of his life, Barbara L. McKim, in Utica Michigan. They lived in Madison Heights and Utica before moving to Gaylord. Fred and Barbara built their own home and have called Gaylord home since 1977. 

Fred loved spending time with all his family. He loved the outdoors, fishing, trapping hunting, polka dancing and listening to polka music. He also enjoyed watching Red Wings hockey with his Pepsi and a MilkyWay candy bar. Fred was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years; his parents; brothers, and sisters.

He is survived by his children, Brian (Tamula) Techel of Gaylord, Gregory (Sharon) Techel of Gaylord, Deborah (Michael) Duty of Gaylord, Darlene Techel of Gaylord and Heidi (Scott) Rose of Mancelona; grandchildren, Jennie (Bobby), Nicole (Ian), Samantha (Josh), Patrick (Hannah), Philip, Stacey (Bobby), Kellie, Kyle (Alivia), Josh (Monica), Jackie (Trent), Maggie, Amber (Rodger), Alix and Cameron (Whitney); 21 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 8th at 12:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gaylord, Michigan, with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m.  A visitation will be held at the Nelson Funeral Home on Friday, June 7th beginning at 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

    He and his wife were role models in raising a wonderful family. I was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school with you Tammy. May The Lord comfort and continue to bless the Techel family.

    Fred was a great man. I always enjoyed shooting the breeze with him when we crossed paths. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

    Fred worked for the Gaylord Community Schools the same time I did. He was such an outgoing and friendly person. I enjoyed talking and visiting with Fred when he came around the schools. Many others did too. He was surely well liked. Our prayers are with him. May he Rest In Peace.
