Denise Lynn Phelps-Johnson, 57, of Wolverine (formerly of Davison & Lapeer), died Saturday, June 6, 2020.

Denise was born March 15, 1963 in Flint, Michigan to Robert Phelps and Patricia (Schinzel) Kain. She graduated from Lapeer East High School, class of 1981. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education (mathematics) from U of M – Flint and eventually went on to earn two master’s degrees in education. Denise was a teacher with the Lapeer Community Schools for over 26 years,  she retired in 2018. Denise was a member of the Davison Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3589. She loved walking, hiking and biking. Denise loved spending time with her friends but even more importantly, she loved & adored her fur babies, Hazel and Jeni. Her dearest friends will always remember their time spent with Denise at the Looney Bin on the lake.

Denise is survived by her husband, Craig “CJ” Johnson; mother, Pat Kain of Grand Blanc; father, Robert Phelps of Cook; step-daughters: Molly Johnson of Saginaw and Shannon Johnson of Saginaw; siblings: Brett Phelps of Bowling Green, KY, Patrick Phelps of Bowling Green, KY and James (Chas) Phelps of Davison; mother & father in-law: Diane & Charles Johnson of Davison. Denise is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins and many, many friends she considered dear family.

A celebration of Denise’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the Davison Fraternal Order of Eagles #3589, 3270 N. State Road, Davison, Michigan 48423. We would also like to invite everyone to a celebration of life for Denise at the Wildwood Lakes Golf Course, the celebration will start at 2:00 p.m. at the club house, 3914 Secord Road, Wolverine, MI 49799.  We will provide sloppy Joe’s and pulled pork with cheese potatoes,  feel free to bring a dish of your choosing.

The second celebration of Denise’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the Wildwood Lakes Golf Club, 3915 Secord Rd., Wolverine, Michigan, 49799. Please feel free to bring a dish to pass and great memories od Denise.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to the Denise Phelps-Johnson Memorial Scholarship for Math. Donations to the scholarship fund may be made through a GoFundMe account set up in Denise’s memory.

  2. Although it has been a long time since we have communicated , Denise you were always thought of on a daily basis! I will truly miss you. I will always treasure all the memories from when we were younger and stories will continue to be told. My heart goes out to your family.
