Bernice Irene Bergman, 92, of Gaylord, passed away at home on Sunday, September 17, 2017.
Mrs. Bergman was born in Detroit on September 1, 1925 to Martin & Anna (Martell) Harju. Bernice and her husband Sam were charter members of the Peace Lutheran Church. She remained active in a host of church functions until her health no longer permitted. She loved to spend time in the U.P. in Newberry at “camp” where family and friends often frequented. Moments there will never be forgotten.
She enjoyed raising her family and cherished every moment spent with them. She was an avid quilter and seamstress, and she loved her Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons—Bernice was an avid fan that hardly ever missed watching them play. Her savant grandson Josh recently became Gaylord High School’s Head Soccer Coach. She celebrated his success with each win.
She is survived by her children, Linda (Jack) Chambers of Gaylord, Kenneth (Cindy) Bergman of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Charles Bergman of Kinross, MI, and Stephen Bergman of Kawkawlin, MI; 10 grandchildren, Lynnette, Andy, Erik, Monica, Karla, Zachary, Brian, Brenda, Josh and Jeremy and 10 great grandchildren, Brenna, Brandon, Issabella, Charlie, Logan, Annabelle, Elizabeth, Evalynne, Braedyn, and Ryder.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin & Anna Harju; her husband, Alver “Sam” Bergman on Jan 18, 2017 and her siblings, Martin & Charles Harju and Anna Gentz.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 10am from Peace Lutheran Church in Gaylord with Pastor Thomas Mammoser officiating. The family will receive friends at the church for visitation on Saturday beginning at 9am and lasting until the time of service.
Memorial contributions may be made in Bernice’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.

What an amazing lady. She was class and giggles. She loved her family, sports, quilting and God. She will be greatly missed.
Steve and family, I’m so sorry for your loss. I think your mom really wanted to be with your dad. I wish I could be there tomorrow to pay my respects but I have to work. I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

All my love to Sam and Bernice’s families. A long time ago Bernice made quilts for my boys. we still have them and appreciated the handmade touches she put into. The boys each had secret pockets that she sewed into the quilt. They both will be missed.
