Barbara A. Henderson, 94, formerly of Gaylord, passed away Friday, February 14, 2020, at Mallard Cove Assisted Living in Petoskey.

Mrs. Henderson was born on February 10, 1926, in Detroit, to Don Leon and Emma LaSha.  In 1946 she married Jack Henderson, who preceded her in death in 2008.

After attending the University of Michigan and Central Michigan University, she obtained a Specialist Degree in education.  She taught grades 3 through 7 in the Gaylord Community Schools system for 40 years and is still fondly remembered by former students for teaching her class to perform plays entirely in Spanish

Mrs. Henderson was also a Master Gardener.  She never lost her love for digging in the soil to create beauty and sustenance.  She loved folk music and had a beautiful singing voice. She would often burst into song without hesitation.

Mrs. Henderson is survived by two children, Paul (Holly) Henderson, and Leah (Dennis) Cygan; and three grandchildren, Jeremy (Michelle) Henderson, Jason (Kristy) Alexander, and Katherine (Adam) Kaczanowski.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and the family will remember her privately.

Contributions in memory of Barbara Henderson may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union or the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Nelson Funeral Home, PO Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Although I never had her for a teacher, I remember her from my elementary years (40-50’’s).

I am sorry for the loss of your mother. May God bless her and your family during this time.

  4. I had the opportunity to meet her at her home with her mother, both were great people. I loved having her as my third grade teacher. She was always so soft spoken and kind.

  5. Paul and family, sorry for your loss. I can close my eyes and picture being in her class room, she was always so kind and easy going. Glad we have fond memories of those days. God Bless!

She was my sixth grade teacher when we moved to Gaylord in 1971. I loved her and I always felt special because we had the same birth date “February 10th”. Prayers for your family.

Leah — so sorry for the loss of your Mom. Losing a parent is difficult, no matter how old they are or how old we are.

She was my sixth grade teacher. Definitely quiet, calm and easy-going. My condolences and prayers for her family.

I am sorry for your loss. I taught in different buildings, but remember “working the phones” with her, to get people to vote “yes” for school mileages. Barb was a true professional and well respected by all at GCS. She was an assist to the school, the community and her students.

So many memories, wonderful neighbor growing up. I treasure the fishing trips with our families. A great third grade teacher, and eventually a colleague teaching in the same Gaylord school. Barb will greatly missed and always fondly remembered.

  12. My condolences to the Barb Henderson family for her recent death. I never worked in the same school with her, but I knew she was a great asset to the school system. She gave of her time to improve the schools in whatever way she could often without any benefit or thanks for herself. Thank you Barbara for all you did for the Gaylord Community Schools! RIP!
