Audrey Alice Rice, age 85, passed away on July 11, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Grayling, Michigan.

She was born to John and Alice (Marciniak) Obrockta on August 26, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan. Audrey married her loving husband Charles “Tim” Rice at SS Cyril in Methodius on June 16, 1951, and they were married until his death in 2005.

Audrey was blessed with 12 children, which allowed her to spend most of her life working from home, raising her family. As a teenager, Audrey worked as a store clerk, at Grinnels Market, to pay tuition to a catholic high school, Nativity of Our Lord. This is one of many reasons Audrey’s children were proud to call her their mother.

One of Audrey’s favorite past times was traveling to Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, from her home in Hazel Park, to enjoy the outdoor activities the location had to offer. She had property in Lewiston and would often be found camping, canoeing, and enjoying nature. She was especially fond of mushroom picking. In addition to her love of the outdoors, Audrey also enjoyed expressing her artistic side.

After living in Hazel Park for over 60 years, Audrey became fondly known as “the ma” to everyone in the neighborhood. If you ever needed someone to talk to, a place to stay, or anything at all, she was always there whether you were one of her children or not.

Audrey is survived by her daughters, Linda “Susie” (Jim) Waddy, Carol (Dave) Peterson, Kathy (John) Travnik, Peggy (Julian) Rybicki, Cindy (Steve) Langewicz, and Amy (John) Maloney; and son, Christopher “Chuckie” Rice. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, John and Alice; her husband, Charles “Tim”; children, Dennis (Joan) Rice {died Dec. 1985}, Patrick Rice {died Nov. 1993}, Theresa (Mike) Cox {died March 2005}, Timmy (Donna) Rice {died Jan. 2009}, Baby Kenneth {died June 1961}; brother; Anthony “Tony” Bradke {died Sept. 2019}; and sister Germaine Rice {died Nov. 2014}.

Memorial Service will be held at the Hilltop Shelter at Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan, at 345 John R. Road on August 8, 2020. Celebration of Life will take place from 1 p.m.-5 p.m., with a service at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family for assistance with expenses.

Arrangements were entrusted to Nelson Funeral Home, Inc. P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

What can one say about a person who has been in her life since she was a young teen, who have spent many holidays together, created and shared treasured memories? The “Ma” as everyone called her was the most unique woman in my life, from teaching me how to make her famous polish golumpki to teaching her children the techniques of other polish cuisines. I rather enjoyed having her in my life because no matter the circumstance the “ma” always helped us all work it out. My heart is heavy and tears have flowed in the streams, our dear Audrey’s smile shines down upon us from heaven, may she rest in peace with the “dad” and other siblings she longed to gather with again. We will all meet again crossing Digger O’Dell at some point, and when we do; look up to the sky and smile because we know Audrey is watching over us and showering us with her love.

Mrs. Audrey Rice, the matriarch of this big, loud, proud, loving family that I love very much. I was blessed to have you as another ma and to grow up with your children as best friends and even boyfriends.

    Rest easy sweet lady.
