Print Obituary Send Flowers Hood, Duane Obituary

Duane V. Hood, fondly known as Papa to everyone that knew him, quietly passed away Thursday morning (October 27, 2016) at his home on Huffman Lake at the age of 86 while surrounded by his loving family

Born in Toledo, Ohio, he attended Central Catholic High School and then went to college at John Carroll University and Ohio State University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

After graduating college, he continued in the family business, the Earl J Hood Insurance Agency, until his retirement 40 years later. During these 40 years as an independent agent, he fell in love with the Gaylord area, purchased property on Huffman Lake and started building his cabin at the age of 23.

He married Janet in 1959 and together they continued to work on and improve their cabin until the time of his passing.

After retiring in 1995, he and Janet moved to their home on Huffman Lake where they opened Hoods-in-the-Woods Bed and Breakfast. Always the congenial host, he enjoyed taking his guests on afternoon boat rides, often picking up neighbors along the way. Guests may have shown up as a stranger, but they left a member of his extended family.

He enjoyed his family, always living to his motto of “family first”. Other hobbies included skiing, jeep rides with “Willy” in the woods, family trips, snowmobiling, boat rides and hunting. When asked how he was doing, he was famous for responding, “I’m practically sensational!” A true Buckeye to the end, he loved teasing his Michigan friends about how well Ohio State was doing and how sorry he was that Michigan wasn’t doing so well.

Born to Earl J and Loretta Hood, Duane is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet Hood; children, Michael Hood, Randi (Michael Terry) Hood Terry, Thomas Hood and Donald (Cynthia) Hood; grandchildren, Patrick Hood, Brittany Oehlers, Jessica Oehlers, Joseph Hood, Andrew Hood, Nicole Hood and Alexis Hood; a great-grandson, Eli Haskin and a brother Paul Hood. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Jane Milliron.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Vanderbilt, followed by interment at Resurrection Cemetery in Vanderbilt. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday, Oct 28, 2016 from 3pm-7pm. Visitation will continue Saturday (Oct. 29) at the church beginning at 10AM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Redeemer Church in Vanderbilt, (where Duane has been a long-time member), through the Nelson Funeral Home, PO Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

I purchased the Earl J. Hood Insurance Agency from Duane and Janet in 1995. I soon discovered that he had an amazing gift for creating intelligently designed insurance programs for each of his clients. He cared very much for them and fought hard to protect their interests. He was well known for creating one of the finest insurance agencies in all of Northwestern Ohio. Duane was also well known for his sense of humor and his laughter was contagious. To those that knew him, he was truly a class act. God bless you Duane. We will always remember your kindness. Mike & Sherry Fitzpatrick
